Comeback Planned for Girls’ Book Series  →
The Baby-Sitters Club books are coming back for a new generation. What happened to the generation that read them the first time around? David Levithan, the editorial director at Scholastic and an editor of The Baby-Sitters Club, had this to say: “This whole generation of girls who had grown up reading The Baby-Sitters Club were now teachers, librarians or mothers.” I’m sorry,...

The 'Israelification' of airports: High security,... →
Israelis have to live with terrorist acts all the time. How do their airports handle that climate? I like the suggestion that you look at the person, not the item. I could see that being added to our system as it stands.

10 most influential books of 2000-2009  →
And my thoughts: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2000) by J.K. Rowling The one where people really caught on. Not my favorite of the series, but it catapulted Rowling from excellent children’s author to uber-rich-and-famous children’s writing god. White Teeth (2000) by Zadie Smith Not sure how this one is so influential. Smith’s talented, but I’m not sure I see...

10 Words You Need to Stop Misspelling →
I’m so glad they included “a lot vs. alot” in this list! Also, I’m glad they put “misspelling” in the title, because that’s one I question a lot.

Because "Happy Holidays" isn't an offense →
Mark Pettus makes the point that getting all huffy about not saying “Merry Christmas” is actually less in the spirit of Christmas. I always say “Happy Holidays,” unless it’s actually December 24/25, just because it’s the holiday season—which includes New Years and Thanksgiving, totally non-religious holidays.

Christmas Card Leaves Gingers Seeing Red →
Tesco had to withdraw one of its Christmas cards, which read “SANTA loves all kids. Even GINGER ones.” I feel like the redhead hate is worse in the UK. Stop living in denial and admit that redheads are awesome already!

Indie Sweethearts Pitching Products →
“Which brings us to Luke Wilson and his multiple AT&T commercials. Observe Wilson’s blooming jowls and vaguely boarlike visage. Recoil at the sight of his dorky tweed blazer combos. And ponder: What on earth, beyond the lure of a paycheck, might have convinced him to make these ads?” I agree. What happened, Luke? Also, Zooey could sell anything—not just...

Eight Tips to Know If You're Being Boring →
Lots of “uh huhs” tend to do it. Also, seven boring topics to avoid. (Another one I would add: that time you were soooo drunk omg. Unless you ended up talking to a cop, naked, with a dildo strapped to your head, and he let you go, I don’t really care.) How do you deal with the bores?
